Long Distance Calling Areas

Take the confusion out of Long Distance.
In addition to area codes, states are divided into one or more geographical regions called LATAs (Local Area Transport Area). Also known as long distance calling areas, LATAs are used to determine the rates that you pay for long distance calls.  Iowa is divided into 5 LATAs. (See map below.)

Toll calls made to an area within your LATA are called intraLATA calls. This can also be referred to as your local (or short) long distance calling.

Toll calls made to an area outside of your LATA are called interLATA calls. This can also be referred to as your long distance calling.

Rates for toll calls are based on the type of call (intraLATA or interLATA) and which long distance company you use. You can have the same company for both types of calls, or choose a different company for each. Check with your long distance provider for your specific rates.
